Parenting is hard, and Godly parenting is much harder. But you’ve come here because you want or need help in training your children in Biblical principles, and you want to lead them to a relationship with Jesus Christ. You feel compelled to make disciples within your family. And you are the starting point! You see, God designed the family from the very beginning to be the context within which disciples (or Jesus-followers) are made. It’s not the church’s responsibility to make disciples of your children. It’s your pastor’s responsibility. Or your children’s Sunday School teachers. It’s yours.
Let’s look at a passage from the Bible that will serve as our foundation:
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6:4-7)
Love God Completely
God’s first command to you is love Him, and love Him with your whole being. Do you love God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might? If you can’t answer with “yes,” stop right now and ask God in prayer to increase your love and devotion to Him. Unless you love God and follow Him unconditionally, nothing else matters.
You cannot effectively train your children to love God if you don’t, because discipleship is imitation. As you imitate God’s love in your family, your children learn to imitate God through you. Because discipleship is all about the relationship. First, your relationship with God, then with your spouse, then with your children. Love God.
Study God’s Word
The second command God gives you in this passage is to keep His word to you on your heart. Jesus said it like this: “If you abide in my words, you are truly my disciples” (John 8:31) The Bible has been called God’s Love Letter to His People, and it is through Bible study that we know the Author more intimately. In order to effectively train your children and grow them into disciples of Jesus, you must be a disciple of Jesus yourself.
Teach God’s Word To Your Children
As you grow in your own love relationship with God, you become empowered and enabled to teach God’s Word and Truth to your children. You don’t have to know the whole Bible to teach your children. You don’t have to understand everything. But you do have to be on the same path, and you will be leading your children with you toward God.
Are you Ready?
We want to help you build a framework or plan to disciple your children. Since every child is different, your framework will need to be custom, and you will need to build it. But we are here to help you design, build and implement your discipleship framework for your family and children.
